Friend Palmer papers, 1820-1906

Papers principally pertain to his activities as Michigan State Agent for prosecuting military claims against the Federal government. Also included are various real estate records; a record of the firm of Currier & McChesney; a minute book of the Long Island Clam Extract Company; Mariners' Church, Detroit; and a typescript of account of the discover of Conglomerate in Calumet in 1864.

Ed Hulbert was in music school in Grand Rapids (Mich.), 1861-1863. Hez may be a nickname or an abbreviation for Hezekiel. There is no Hez Hulbert listed in the Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Index. Born in Canandaigua, Ontario County, N.Y., 17 May 1820; came to Detroit with his family in 1827. Lived in Detroit for most of his life; worked in the book business. He spent about 5 years in Buffalo during the 1840s, where he worked for W.B. & C.E. Peck Booksellers and Stationers, agents for Pomeroy & Co., forerunner of American Express. During the Mexican War, he served as quartermaster for the U.S. Army, and during the Civil War he was appointed quartermaster-general of Michigan. Died ...
